Into the Pocket of Night

Come daylight the pond lilies

inside their leathery purses

begin to open

​

Petal by pointed petal

upon blue waters

they widen - widening

into upside down umbrellas

to become white stars

​

​A dragonfly looks into

the floating basket of flowers

Green lily pads hold fast

their brides in white

​

The evening counts the time of day

​closing flower petals

one by one folding them again

into the pocket of night
